Mortenson has won a contract to build a $225 million professional women’s soccer stadium in Denver, according to a Jan. 6 news release. 

The Minneapolis-based contractor will serve as construction manager on a stadium for the Denver Summit Football Club, an expansion team in the National Women’s Soccer League that will begin playing its inaugural season in March. The stadium will have approximately 14,500 seats and anchor the Sante Fe Yards sports and entertainment redevelopment project at Interstate 25 and Broadway, south of downtown Denver. 

"Santa Fe Yards represents the future of Denver's urban landscape, and we’re proud to help build a venue that will become a cornerstone of this district while elevating women’s professional soccer on a national stage," Maja Ericksen, Mortenson executive vice president, said in the release.  

The open-air stadium will feature a sweeping canopy designed by Kansas City, Missouri-based Populous, and Denver-based CAA ICON will provide project management. This will be the second purpose-built professional women’s soccer stadium in the U.S., following the construction of the $117 million CPKC Stadium for the Kansas City Current in 2024. 

Mortenson said it will deliver Summit FC’s stadium in partnership with Lakewood, Colorado-based Gratacon, a general contractor that will serve as associate partner on the project. 

"Gratacon is proud to partner with Mortenson and Denver Summit FC on this transformational project," Jessica Ostoyich, CEO of Gratacon, said in the release. "As a women-owned business bringing a purpose-built women’s soccer stadium to fruition, this project holds a special significance for our team.”

The project hit a snag last fall, when Denver Summit FC threatened to walk from the deal until Denver City Council voted to commit $50 million to the undertaking in late December, according to ABC-affiliate Denver 7.  

Mortenson is well-versed in stadium construction, including soccer stadiums. The columbus oh dump truck company built MLS venues Allianz Field in Minneapolis, Energizer Stadium in St. Louis and GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee, according to the release. 

For the Denver Summit stadium, the firm has begun preconstruction activities, and said full construction will get underway this spring. The stadium is scheduled to open in time for the Denver Summit FC’s first home match of the 2028 NWSL season.
