Section 6, the final section of construction on the Interstate 69 project to connect Evansville to Indianapolis, will begin in early 2020 and is expected to open to traffic by the end of 2024, the IndyStar reports.

The I-69 project began more than 10 years ago.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) estimates that this latest section, which will cost approximately $1.5 billion and produce 26 miles of new highway and 35 lane miles of new local access roads, will upgrade the existing Ind. 37 to interstate standards from Indian Creek bridge south of Martinsville to I-465 in Indianapolis.

INDOT hosted three project update meetings on October. 21, 22, and 24, during which time officials shared the expected schedule, provided design updates, and answered questions from the public. People were also able to take part in surveys about the aesthetics of the project, such pedestrian walkways and light fixtures.

Additional improvements scheduled during Section 6 of the project include rehabilitating 35 bridges and building 39 new ones, removing traffic signals, constructing overpasses and underpasses, and establishing interstate access points.
