Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) Regional Engineer DeJarvis Leonard tells WBRC-TV that the reconstruction of Interstate 59/20 through downtown Birmingham is on schedule to be completed by March 22, 2020.

Leonard noted that 1,600 new bridge segments had already been placed and that there were just 700 more to go.

“We are somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 percent or over 60 percent complete of the bridge erection,” Leonard told the news agency. “We are still somewhere between 75 percent to 80 percent complete on the overall project.”

A mile-long section of I-59/20 is currently shut down and traffic has been negatively impacted with detours through downtown Birmingham. So, as an incentive to get the interstate open sooner, ALDOT is offering the contractor, Johnson Brothers, a $15 million bonus if the project is completed two months ahead of time.
