At approximately 3 p.m. on January 8, a tractor trailer ran into the Sanderson Bridge, a covered bridge in Brandon, Vermont, despite warning signs alerting the driver of the bridge’s low, 12-foot clearance, the Rutland Herald reports.

Witnesses reported that the driver of the tractor trailer tried to go through the bridge, but had to back out after damaging the bridge. He left the scene, but witnesses got the license plate number and reported it to the police.

Brandon Police found the driver, gave him a citation, and released him. He will have to appear in Vermont Superior Court Rutland Criminal Division on March 4.

Town Manager David Atherton told the news agency that one of the bridge’s trusses was broken and another was cracked. He said the damage is bad enough that it needs to be fixed, but engineers examined photos of the damage and indicated that it is safe to use while it awaits repair.
